The political landscape in Texas is heating up with two major controversies taking center stage: birth tourism and government grants to SpaceX. These issues have sparked intense debates among lawmakers, highlighting the state’s complex relationship with federal policies and corporate interests.
In one corner, a Texas lawmaker is pushing for a special legislative session to tackle birth tourism, while in another, a Democratic candidate for attorney general is vowing to investigate substantial grants awarded to Elon Musk’s SpaceX. These developments underscore the state’s ongoing struggle with immigration policies and the allocation of public funds.
Birth Tourism Legislation Proposed
Following the U.S. Supreme court‘s decision to uphold birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, Republican state Rep. Brian Harrison is calling for immediate action. Harrison has urged the Texas Legislature to convene a special session to address what he terms the issue of birth tourism.
In his letter, Harrison proposed several measures, including making it a felony to operate or participate in birth tourism within Texas. He also suggested expanding the criminal offense of illegal entry to include entering the state for the purpose of birth tourism and granting the Texas attorney general authority to investigate and prosecute such cases.
Harrison’s proposal has garnered support from members of Congress, including U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, who expressed his backing for the initiative. Harrison emphasized the need for Texas to take decisive action despite the Supreme Court’s ruling and pressure the federal government to address birth tourism and birthright citizenship.
Controversial Grants to SpaceX
Meanwhile, Democratic Texas attorney general candidate Nathan Johnson has raised concerns about the $110 million in grants awarded to SpaceX for its Starlink satellite program. Johnson, who won the Democratic primary runoff in May, has stated that the deal ‘sure looks like’ corruption, given that 99% of the available grant funds were directed to a company led by billionaire Elon Musk.
During his primary campaign, Johnson promised to overhaul the office of the Texas attorney general, currently held by scandal-ridden Republican Ken Paxton. He has vowed to work closely with the state comptroller to audit how government contracts are awarded. The Starlink grants, signed off on by Republican Texas governor Greg Abbott, have become a source of controversy, with eight companies offering ground-based fiber broadband complaining they were cut out of the revised grant application process.
Johnson questioned members of the Texas broadband development office at a state senate hearing in June, where they conceded that changes to the grant-awarding process came at Abbott’s behest. Johnson has promised to look closer at the state’s dealings with SpaceX if he wins in November, putting an investigation into Musk effectively on the ballot.
Demands for Transparency in ICE Shooting
In another development, four Houston Democratic members of Congress have demanded an independent investigation into the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. The lawmakers argue that ICE has not released video evidence to support claims that Salgado Araujo ‘weaponized his vehicle’ to try to run over the agent who fired the fatal shot.
The lawmakers demanded that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE provide ‘complete and unedited’ body camera footage for the officer who fired the deadly shot as well as footage from other officers present. They also questioned what led to the targeted enforcement operation and who authorized it.
The family of Salgado Araujo disputes ICE’s account, stating that there is no eyewitness testimony or released video showing the alleged ramming. The Democrats’ letter asked for evidence supporting the sequence of events leading to the shooting and the number of federal officers in the immediate area.
These controversies highlight the intense political climate in Texas, where issues of immigration, government transparency, and corporate influence are at the forefront of public discourse.
