A Severe Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for Llano, Burnet, Williamson, Travis, and Bastrop Counties until 7:00 PM CDT today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The warning is in effect due to dangerously hot conditions, with temperatures up to 107°F and heat index values up to 110°F expected this afternoon. Temperatures up to 105°F are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.
An Extreme Heat Warning indicates that prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity may lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents in the affected areas should take precautions to stay cool and hydrated.
To stay safe during this extreme heat event, the NWS recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. Check on relatives and neighbors, especially those who are elderly or have pre-existing health conditions. If you must be outside, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. If you or someone else shows symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, move to a cool and shaded location and call 911 for emergency assistance.
