The early hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026, were marked by tragedy in northeast Lubbock. A fatal shooting in the 2900 block of East Auburn Street has left the community in shock and authorities working diligently to uncover the details surrounding the incident.

The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is leading the investigation into the shooting that claimed the life of Stephon Jones a 37-year-old resident. The incident unfolded at approximately 1:59 a.m., drawing a swift response from local law enforcement.

The incident and aftermath

The Lubbock police Department received a call about the shooting at a residence near Parkway Drive inside of Northeast Loop 289. Upon arrival, officers found Jones with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, Jones succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

As the investigation got underway, a large crowd began to gather, complicating the efforts of law enforcement to secure and process the scene.
