The tragic drowning of 18-year-old Daniel Erving at Lake Ray Hubbard earlier this year has taken a new turn with the arrest of two individuals on evidence tampering charges. Lucas Roper, 19, and a juvenile suspect are now facing third-degree felony charges, as the investigation into Erving’s death continues to unfold.

The Dallas Police Department has expressed its deepest condolences to Erving’s family, acknowledging the tragic loss of a young life. The case has sparked discussions about accountability and the urgency of response in such incidents.

The Incident and Initial Investigation

On April 13, Daniel Erving was reported missing by the Rowlett Police Department after he was last seen with Roper and a 17-year-old juvenile at Lake Ray Hubbard. Investigators allege that the three jumped into the water from a railroad bridge near the 6300 block of Miller Road, where Erving tragically drowned.

The dallas county Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Erving’s death an accidental drowning. However, the investigation took a different direction when detectives discovered that Roper and the juvenile had failed to report the incident and had discarded some of Erving’s belongings.

Allegations of Evidence Tampering

According to the arrest affidavit, after Erving drowned, Roper and the juvenile fled the scene in Roper’s vehicle. Investigators allege that Roper threw Erving’s clothing into a tree line near the bridge, and the juvenile threw Erving’s cellphone from the vehicle after Roper instructed him to do so. Both items were later recovered by detectives.

During a voluntary interview with detectives, Roper allegedly admitted to panicking after Erving drowned and fleeing the scene. He also confessed to deleting all communications with Erving from his cellphone, fearing that an investigation would ensue and he would get into trouble. Detectives confirmed that the communications had indeed been deleted.

The Legal Implications

The affidavit alleges that Roper tampered with physical evidence by discarding Erving’s clothing and deleting communications with Erving from his cellphone. It also alleges that Roper and the juvenile stopped their vehicle away from the scene and threw Erving’s cellphone into a ditch to prevent it from being available to investigators.

Both suspects have been arrested, and the cases will proceed through the criminal justice system. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities seeking to uncover the full circumstances surrounding Erving’s death.

The Community’s Response

The case has drawn significant attention from the community, with many questioning the delayed response and the actions taken by those present at the scene. Dominique Alexander, President of the Next Generation Action Network, has spoken out about the need for urgency, accountability, and equal justice in such cases.

Alexander emphasized that the family of Daniel Erving deserves answers and that the case represents a breakdown in the system. He called for immediate action and justice, highlighting the importance of transparency and thorough investigation in cases involving the loss of young lives.

As the investigation continues, the community awaits further developments, hoping for closure and justice for Daniel Erving and his family.
