The search for a suspect in a tragic shooting that marred a high school graduation ceremony in Fairfield has come to an end with the arrest of a 17-year-old boy in Texas. The incident, which took place on June 3, resulted in the death of an 18-year-old student and left three others injured.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed due to his age, was taken into custody early Friday morning in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He is currently awaiting extradition to Solano County to face charges related to the shooting.
The incident and the investigation
The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the football stadium at Fairfield High School, which was hosting the graduation ceremony for Sem Yeto High School, a continuation high school. The victim, identified as Jamario Baker, was reportedly wearing his graduation gown when he was fatally injured while exiting the stadium and meeting his family.
According to Fairfield Police Department, the investigation involved conducting dozens of witness interviews and reviewing hours of surveillance video. The breakthrough came when witnesses alerted authorities that the suspect had fled to Texas.
“There were many witnesses that were present, there were over a 1,000 witnesses that day. Many people did provide information that ultimately helped solve this case,” said Captain Nicholas McDowell.
The community’s response
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the Fairfield community. Sam Morris, pastor of BayNorth Church of Christ, shared that Baker’s mother tried to save him after he was shot. The 11-year-old victim was Baker’s sibling, adding to the tragedy of the event.
Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy stated that the incident was believed to be a targeted attack. The community has been urged to come forward with any information that could aid the ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to contact the Police Department’s Investigations Division at (707) 428-7600 or by email at [email protected].
The road ahead
While the arrest marks a significant development in the case, the investigation is far from over. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to build a comprehensive case against the suspect.
The extradition process is expected to take some time, but once the suspect is brought back to Solano County, the legal proceedings will begin. The community is hopeful that justice will be served for the victim and his family.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of school safety and the need for continued efforts to prevent such events from occurring in the future.
