The Methodist Healthcare System is set to enhance healthcare access on San Antonio’s South Side with the construction of a new freestanding emergency room and outpatient clinic. This strategic expansion aims to serve a community that has faced significant healthcare disparities and limited access to medical services.
The new facilities will be located at the intersection of South Zarzamora Street and Southwest Loop 410. The project includes an $8.5 million11-bed freestanding ER spanning over 11,000 square feet. Adjacent to the ER, a three-story60,000 square-foot medical office building will provide outpatient specialty care.
The Methodist ER Palo Alto and Its Significance
The new freestanding ER, branded as Methodist ER Palo Alto is scheduled to open in early 2028. This will be the system’s 12th freestanding ER in San Antonio, operating as an extension of full-scale hospital trauma centers. Patients requiring higher-level care will be transferred to Methodist Hospital Metropolitan which is currently undergoing a $200 million expansion.
Greg Seiler CEO of Methodist Hospital Metropolitan, emphasized the critical need for this expansion. “We know that there’s a need, an even greater need now. In addition to that, this is an area that is just growing dramatically,” Seiler stated. The South Side has seen significant population growth, driven by the expansion of manufacturers like Toyota and JCB.
Addressing Healthcare Disparities on the South Side
The new facilities will serve an area that lost access to care when the Texas Vista Medical Center closed in 2026. The South Side has historically faced healthcare disparities and has less access to care compared to the northern half of the city. Methodist Healthcare System, a partnership between Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas and HCA Healthcare operates a total of 11 hospitals in the San Antonio area.
In addition to the new ER and outpatient clinic, Methodist maintains two other Southside facilities: a freestanding ER at Brooks and an urgent care in San Antonio’s Southeast neighborhood. The system’s focus on outpatient care aligns with a broader trend in healthcare, emphasizing efficiency and accessibility.
Collaboration and Future Developments
The county-owned hospital system, University Health is also contributing to the healthcare landscape in the area. They are building the Palo Alto Hospital near the Texas A&M San Antonio campus set to open in 2027. Additionally, University Health opened the Vida clinic adjacent to the new hospital late last year.
Seiler highlighted the shift towards less hospital-centric models, focusing on outpatient care. “There’s more and more things that can be done on an outpatient basis and in clinics and in an ambulatory setting, as opposed to a full-blown hospital,” he explained. “From an efficiency standpoint, if it can be done outside the hospital, we want to provide it in these types of [outpatient] settings.”
