The adventure began at Cedar Hollow Ranch, a private preserve about 100 miles west of San Antonio. Gracie, a 3-year-old reticulated giraffe, wandered into an area of the ranch that other giraffes had previously avoided. According to Vic Jones, the ranch owner, Gracie ventured up a rocky ledge to feed on leaves, only to descend on the wrong side of the gate.

The Challenges of Exotic Animals in Texas
