The state of Texas has taken a significant step in combating the New World screwworm threat with the launch of a new online portal. This initiative, spearheaded by Governor Greg Abbott, aims to provide Texans with the tools and information necessary to protect their livestock, pets, and wildlife from this destructive pest.
The new portal, accessible at screwworm.texas.govserves as a centralized hub for all things related to the New World screwworm. It offers a wealth of resources, including fact sheets, videos, educational materials, and interactive maps, all designed to help residents identify, report, and prevent the spread of this agricultural menace.
Empowering Texans with essential tools
Governor abbott emphasized the importance of this new portal in his announcement. He stated, “The New World screwworm poses a direct threat to Texas livestock, wildlife, and our rural economy. This new website puts essential tools in the hands of our producers, veterinarians, and families.” The portal delivers crucial information, including identification methods, sample collection procedures, and certification resources, enabling Texans to detect and report cases promptly.
The portal also features a New World screwworm Certified Inspector Training program, allowing residents to become certified inspectors at no cost. This initiative is part of a broader effort to expand inspection capacity and ensure the safe movement of livestock shipments through commerce.
Federal funding and collaborative efforts
In addition to the new portal, Texas has secured immediate federal funding to hire additional livestock inspectors and reinforce field operations against the ongoing outbreak. This funding, provided through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), will allow the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) to add 15 term positions, including 10 field inspectors.
State and federal partners are working collaboratively to detect, control, and contain the spread of the New World screwworm. Governor Abbott has taken decisive action, including issuing a statewide disaster declaration, activating the State Emergency Operations Center, and mobilizing a joint Texas New World Screwworm Response Team. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins has also pledged support, stating that the agency has moved “at lightning speed” to eliminate the threat to the domestic livestock industry.
Public vigilance and reporting
Texans are urged to remain vigilant and inspect their animals regularly for open wounds. Suspected cases in livestock or pets should be reported immediately to the TAHC’s 24-hour veterinarian line at 1-800-550-8242. For wildlife, reports should be directed to Texas Parks and Wildlife biologists at 512-389-4505. Officials also warn against moving affected animals to prevent further spread.
The New World screwworm is the larval stage of a fly that infests the warm-blooded tissue of living animals, entering through open wounds. Left untreated, infestations can be fatal to livestock, pets, and wildlife, posing a severe threat to the state’s multibillion-dollar agricultural sector.
