The remote Heard and McDonald Islandslocated about 4,000 kilometers southwest of mainland Australia, have become the epicenter of a devastating H5N1 bird flu outbreak. Researchers from the Australian Antarctic Program have reported the first detection of this strain in an Australian external territory, with sobering consequences for the local wildlife.
The outbreak, which likely arrived from the nearby Crozet Islands around has led to the deaths of an estimated 13,000 seal pupsas well as hundreds of adult king penguins. The mass mortality event has raised concerns about the virus’s continued eastward spread across the sub-Antarctic region.
Unprecedented Mortality Rates Among Southern Elephant Seals
Drone surveys conducted in and revealed alarming mortality rates among southern elephant seal pups. Across the islands, the mortality rate averaged 76%with one area experiencing a staggering 97% death rate. These figures represent a dramatic departure from typical pup mortality rates, which usually remain below 5%.
Dr. Jarrod Hodgsona senior research scientist with the Australian Antarctic Program, described the scene as really devastating. ‘When we departed the island, mortality was still ongoing,’ he noted, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The total pup production was estimated at around 17,000meaning the outbreak has had a profound impact on the breeding population.
Widespread Impact on Avian Species
The H5N1 virus has also affected several bird species on the islands. Six out of nine tested species, including king penguinsgentoo penguinsand South Georgia diving petrelshave tested positive for the strain. Several hundred dead adult king penguins were observed, indicating that the virus is not limited to seal populations.
Dr. Julie McInnesa wildlife biologist and lead author of the study, highlighted the similarities between this outbreak and others in the sub-Antarctic region. ‘Our results show a similar pattern to other sub-Antarctic islands, such as South Georgiawhere elephant seals have been hardest hit,’ she explained. The virus’s ability to spread across vast distances and infect multiple species underscores the need for continued monitoring and research.
Genetic Analysis and Virus Origins
Genetic analysis of samples collected from the islands suggests that the H5N1 virus was likely introduced through wildlife from the Crozet Islandslocated approximately 1,800 kilometers away. The virus’s arrival around marked the beginning of a rapid and devastating spread among the islands’ wildlife populations.
The Australian Antarctic Program continues to monitor for signs of bird flu in other regions, including the Australian Antarctic Territory and Macquarie Islandwhich have not yet reported any suspected cases. The findings from Heard and McDonald Islands have been submitted to the scientific journal BioRxiv but have not yet been peer-reviewed.
The Australian government has allocated an additional $11.2 million in the 2026-27 budget to prepare for potential impacts of H5N1 on at-risk native species on the mainland. Environment Minister Murray Watt emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating, ‘For now we’re free from the serious and contagious H5 bird flu, but as it continues to spread globally, we must be realistic about the likelihood of an incursion here, and plan accordingly.’
Dr. Michelle Willean expert in avian influenza viruses at the University of Melbournenoted that the results of the surveys were consistent with impacts elsewhere in the subantarctic. She stressed the importance of public reporting, encouraging people to report any sightings of sick or dead birds or marine mammals via the emergency animal disease hotline.
