The city of Midland, Texas, was rocked by a violent shooting on Friday morning, leaving one person dead and ten others injured. The suspect, identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, had already been sought by authorities after a tense encounter with law enforcement just days earlier.

The situation escalated as Villarreal barricaded himself in an abandoned veterinary clinic, where he was later found dead.

Villarreal’s criminal history includes several encounters with law enforcement. He was convicted in 2009 for unlawfully carrying a firearm and had faced other charges related to weapons possession and domestic violence in the past. The victim killed in the shooting was identified as Ed Scott, a beloved member of the Midland community. Scott worked in solid waste management and was actively involved in local and regional softball organizations. Four of the injured were taken to Midland Memorial Hospital, where they underwent surgery. Five others received treatment and were subsequently released. The conditions of the remaining victims have not been disclosed.
