Several power lines and utility poles supplying electricity to the clinic had been cut, leading to a cascade of challenges for the organization.
The incident has left the rescue facing not only immediate operational hurdles but also substantial financial setbacks. With the help of the community, however, they are beginning to navigate the aftermath.

Upon discovering the power outage around 7 a.m., staff members quickly realized the severity of the situation. The deliberate act of vandalism had cut off electricity to the clinic, forcing the relocation of all 50 animals housed at the shelter into emergency foster care.
Sarah BrownMarketing Manager at Houston Pets Alive!, highlighted the efforts of the foster coordinator, who worked tirelessly to find temporary homes for the animals. “Our foster coordinator was working tirelessly yesterday, trying to reach out to people to foster,” Brown said. “We were so blessed with the fosters that we do have. Lots of people stepped up. Fosters that hadn’t fostered in a few years even.”
The power was restored by CenterPoint Energy Monday evening, but the damage to the power lines remains unclear. The organization expects animals to begin moving back into the facility throughout the week, though full capacity won’t be possible for at least a week.

The power outage has had a significant impact on the organization’s finances. Brown noted that the clinic lost a full day of revenue, which will take a considerable amount of time to recover. Additionally, the organization had to dispose of vaccines and medications worth “thousands of dollars.”

As of Tuesday evening, the organization had raised $4,624.68 out of an initial goal of $4,500. Brown emphasized that replenishing the supplies used during the relocation will also take a few weeks.
