Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) has made history as the first higher education institution in Texas to introduce a three-year bachelor’s degree program. This innovative initiative, known as Lake Expresswas officially announced this week, marking a significant shift in the landscape of higher education.
The program is designed to provide students with a more efficient pathway to earning their degrees, while also reducing the overall cost of attendance. By condensing the traditional four-year curriculum into six semesters, OLLU aims to help students enter the workforce or pursue graduate studies sooner. The university has ensured that the academic rigor remains intact, maintaining the same general education, major, and minor requirements as conventional programs.
Streamlining Education for Modern Students
OLLU president Abel Chávez emphasized the program’s benefits, stating, “By offering a three-year bachelor’s degree option, we are empowering students to achieve their academic goals more efficiently while reducing financial burdens and opening doors to career opportunities sooner.” The program includes majors such as psychologycriminology and criminal justicesocial workand childhood studieswith the option to pair them with a minor.
The launch of Lake Express comes on the heels of a study that classified OLLU as a “high stress” institution, citing its adaptability to economic changes. However, OLLU provost Alan J. Silva contested these findings, noting that the study was based on 2026 data and did not reflect recent changes implemented by the university. These changes include the discontinuation of 19 low-enrollment programs and the introduction of a “no-cost” five-year master’s program for eligible students this May.
Adapting to the Evolving Educational Landscape
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has already approved the Lake Express program, paving the way for the first cohort of students to enroll in fall 2026. This approval underscores OLLU’s commitment to innovation and its ability to meet the evolving needs of students in a rapidly changing educational environment.
Political scientist Kyle L. Saunders from Colorado State University, who authored the study, evaluated universities based on their resilience to factors such as the rise of AI and falling enrollment. Despite the study’s conclusions, OLLU has demonstrated its capacity for adaptation through initiatives like Lake Express and other strategic changes.
As higher education continues to evolve, OLLU’s three-year degree program stands as a testament to the university’s dedication to providing accessible and efficient educational opportunities. By addressing the financial and time constraints faced by many students, OLLU is setting a new standard for higher education in Texas.
